MEMPHIS, TN

The Memphis hub is the core of the FedEx network of facilities, and is where the preponderance of work for FedEx originates.  We have been involved in many projects in the hub, including the Secondary 12 Contingency Project, the International Input Canopy Project, the Fourth Floor Customs Cage Project, the International Chute Extension Project, the South Secondary Transfer Vehicle Retirement and AMJ Compatibility Project and the 180k Expansion Project.

The company’s staff has provided many years of design and engineering services while assisting in system reliability and maintenance.  In addition to the main projects in Memphis, we have supported the Services Group at FedEx in the installation of over 200 Mass Scan & Dimensioning Systems throughout the country; and have also assisted in international installations.

PARIS, FRANCE

Holt Engineering was involved in the expansion design of the FedEx facility at Charles de Gaulle International Airport serving Paris, France.  This project added a third secondary to the sortation system as well as a dedicated truck and van facility.  Our involvement was in mechanical and structural design and layout of the sortation system for the general contractor, Dolmen Industrial Products of Brussels, Belgium.  Through creative system rerouting and component elimination, we were able to reduce project costs by more than 300,000 dollars.  In addition, we delicately interfaced with our client (Dolmen), the users (FedEx Paris), the planners (FedEx Memphis) and the leaser (Airport de Paris).

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

Our work in Alaska began in 1998 when we, as a part of PSI, designed the Phase IV Expansion.  This project required an exhaustive interface with the building code officials, to keep the project on track for completion, while satisfying the extensive requirements of the officials.  And later, in 2007, we completed a small expansion of an existing secondary in the Anchorage hub.

GUANGZHO, CHINA

We were requested by FKI to assist them in their design of the new sortation hub in Guangzhou, China, which will be the new Pacific Rim hub for FedEx as they move out of Subic Bay, Indonesia.  We were instrumental in reworking the bulk truck interface with the system, and accomplished the established egress requirements, while holding to the sort design specifications.  While assisting on this project, we were required to know and apply Chinese steel standards, shapes and specifications.  This project further required a key understanding of the owner’s perspective and the contractor’s responsibility in balancing scope and supply.

NASA PROJECT

In 2006, Holt Engineering was asked to assist Centimark Roofing, who had a contract to replace the concrete roof of the NASA hanger which had been damaged by hurricane Katrina.  The roof panels were large, heavy and positioned at a high elevation.  When the original plan to boom them down one at a time proved to be too dangerous, rough sketches were drawn for a large but mobile gantry crane to be placed on the roof; and Holt Engineering drafted plans that were submitted to the corps of engineers for approval.  Having the ability to seal the plans for both the state of Louisiana (the state of erection) and Tennessee (the state of fabrication) enabled Holt Engineering to provide this service.  The design was successfully implemented, surpassed all expectations for speed of execution, and became a benchmark for concrete panel roof replacement.
